About

My name is Callaghan McCarthy and I am an Educational Psychologist based in the West Cork area.

I retired as a primary school principal in 2012 and returned to college and qualified as an Educational Psychologist in 2016. In 2001 I completed a degree in Psychology and in 2003 I received an Advanced Diploma in Child Development. I received a BA in Irish in 1980.

Having taught multiple classes all my teaching life, I was challenged to understand why some children struggled to learn; be it academically, socially, in group settings, or individually. Every child and adult is challenged at some stage of life. It is how we perceive and understand the obstacles placed before us that enables us to deal with, and succeed in, everyday life.

While a qualification in psychology doesn’t offer any quick solutions to these challenges, it does help to tease apart the many strands within the individual person, and their home and school environment that may create difficulties for them.

In my practice in Clonakilty, West Cork, I offer the following services:

  • Psycho-educational assessment of learning strengths and weaknesses
  • Emotional regulation and behaviour management
  • Assessment of attainment in reading, spelling, writing and maths
  • Consultancy service to schools and parents in relation to planning for students with needs

Professional affiliations

  • Registered member of the Teaching Council of Ireland
  • Graduate member of the Psychological Society of Ireland
  • Graduate member of the British Psychological Society

My aim is to work with young people and their parents and teachers to identify their specific needs and difficulties, and to design a support plan that can be implemented in their home and school life to ensure they are given every chance to reach their full potential.
